dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to establish the effect of in-service training on effective planning, implementation and assessment of project based learning in selected Government-aided secondary schools in the Municipality-Mubende District. The study adopted a mixed research approach with an embedded research design which facilitated collection of both qualitative and quantitative data. The sample size for data collection was 223 participants. These included 152 teachers from the 3 Government-aided secondary schools in Mubende Municipality- Mubende District, 9 school administrators, 1 District Education Officer, 1 Municipality education officer and 60 students. Data was collected using self administered questionnaires, interview guide and documentary review guide. Questionnaires were administered to 152 teachers in selected government-aided secondary schools in Mubende Municipality- Mubende District following the random sampling technique. Purposive sampling was used on 9 Administrators, 1 Municipality education officer and 1 District Education officer and data was collected using an interview guide, two focus group discussions of 20 students from each were used to collect data from students where 60 of them were randomly sampled and a documentary review checklist was used so as to collect more data. Quantitative data was organized using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) in terms of descriptive statistics and presented in tables, frequencies and percentages, and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was used to test the hypotheses. Qualitative data was categorized under themes which enabled the research findings to be discussed in the next chapter. Results from the study indicated a significant positive relationship between in-service training and effective planning, implementation and assessment of the project based learning. The study recommended that all serving teachers receive regular in-service training; the ministry of Education should design and implement continuous in-service training programs for secondary school teachers in Government aided secondary schools in the Municipality- Mubende District in order to achieve and maintain effective implementation of Project based learning.
