An investigation of the factors that affect students’ choice of physics at Advanced Level in Kabale District
Abstract
This study investigated the possible factors influencing students’ choice of Physics allied combinations like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB), Physics, Economics and Mathematics (PEM) at Advanced Level. A total number of 133 students were involved in the study. Data was collected from 9 (3 private and 6 government) Advanced level secondary school students in Kabale District, using purposive sampling and stratified sampling in particular for the schools to participate in the study. The instruments for the study were questionnaires for S.5 Arts and Science students, which contained 19 items and interview guide which contained 12 items. The findings of the study indicated that out-of-school experiences, curriculum variables did not significantly influence students’ choice of Physics at Advanced level. However, it was found out that differences by gender of students determine the choice of Physics allied combinations at Advanced level. It was recommended that career guidance be bound not only in schools but also in communities where students had the preconceived views. Also policy makers should pay attention to the gender imbalances by giving female students incentives when still in lower levels so that they may not be left behind with their counterparts. Finally curriculum of Physics should be made relevant by teachers using daily life experiences in the environment.
