Students Welfare and Learning in the Colleges of Education and External Studies, and Humanities and Social Sciences at Makerere University.
Abstract
The purpose of study was to establish the relationship between students welfare and learning in the Colleges of Education and External Studies, and Humanities and Social Sciences, Makerere University. The study was guided by three specific objectives; to find out the relationship between students meals and learning; to examine the relationship between students accommodation and learning; to establish the relationship between students sports and recreation facilities and learning. The study used a correlational cross-sectional design with both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Using Pearson Correlation Co-efficient to examine the relationships, data acquired from a sample of 179 respondents using questionnaires was analyzed while that from interviews was analyzed thematically. The study found that there is significant positive relationship between,
students meals, accommodation, sports and recreation facilities and learning in the Colleges of Education and External Studies, and Humanities and Social Sciences at Makerere University. Meals, accommodation, sports and recreation facilities are fundamental in students learning. Students should be provided with timely meals. Also students‟ accommodation should be improved through providing descent accommodation to students, providing reliable power supply to students, providing enough security to resident or nonresident students, providing enough dustbins in the University halls and providing a ventilation system in the University halls/hostels that are good.
