dc.description.abstractThis paper examined the role of palliative care in the lives of the terminally ill in the light of Salvifici doloris: A case study of Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja. The objectives of the study were; to understand the meaning of palliative care, show the impact of palliative care in the lives of the terminally ill, show challenges to palliative care in Busoga, and to suggest solutions to the challenges to palliative care in Busoga. The research employed a survey research design to obtain data. The sample consisted of 105 respondents who were randomly selected. Methods of data collection included questionnaires and interview guides. The data was analyzed, interpreted, and presented. The findings in accordance to the research objectives revealed that a majority of the people do not understand the meaning of Palliative care. Provision of relief to pain, wholistic care, improvement of quality life, and support to patients and their families were identified as the roles of palliative care. The study further revealed that belief in traditional medicine and witchcraft, limited knowledge about palliative care, inadequacy of personnel and funds, and long distances were the challenges to palliative care. The study made the following recommendations: sensitization of masses, government involvement, recruitment and training of more staff, creation and extension of palliative care centers, fundraising and mobilization of resources, and respect for human life and dignity.en_US
