dc.description.abstract | This study inquired into the influence between culture and education of girls in Wampiti Sub-county Nakasongola District because there were reports that, there was low girl enrollment and increased dropout rates for the same girls, rampant absenteeism and high failure rates of pupils. Thus, it focused on the relative influence of the cultural values, beliefs as well as traditions that parents held in relation to the education of girl child. The study was both quantitative and qualitative involving a number of 30 respondents who were selected purposively. Data was collected from parents/ guardians and their daughters using a questionnaire and interview guide. The study objectives were analyzed descriptively using frequencies, percentages and using thematic method.
The findings showed that beliefs, values as well as traditions play a significant role in impeding girls education in Wampiti Sub-county Nakasongola District. Subsequently, the study concluded that cultural values, beliefs and traditions positively influence the education of girls in Wampiti Sub-county Nakasongola District. It was thus recommended that: government through the Ministry of Education and Sports and Ministry of Gender and Community Development, initiates sensitization seminars on the importance of girls’ education; adult functional literacy programs be revived or introduced; punitive measures against parents who chose to deter their daughters from attending school be initiated as well. | en_US |
