dc.description A project report on design and construction of the low cost seal of 0.6 km Acowa road in Kapelebyong district as a requirement for the award of a Master's in Construction Management of Makerere University. en_US
dc.description.abstract This report is about the cost and quality management in the construction of low cost sealing of 0.6km road section. Low cost sealing technology is a labour intensive technology that improves the life of the road reducing the nuisance of the dust. This project involved feasibility studies by traffic counts, borrow pit investigations, base and sub-base investigation using DCP machines, laboratory tests of gravel, aggregates, quarry dust among others. The design recommended the available local gravel stabilized at 3%, single surface dressing used as a method for sealing, aggregates machine crushed to 18mm from Oculoi rock is used. The contract period recommended four months duration for execution. The labour work was recommended to be 65% of the total cost of labour works. The project was implemented within the time scope agreed, quality control was enforced by using the laboratory tests and cost control was by measuring works during valuation. The lessons learnt from this project are that for successful implementation of the projects, adherence to the recommended phases of project management lifecycle of Initiation which is concerned with definition of the project scope and the respective contract details, Planning; Execution, Monitoring and control and closure, Proper planning prior to any project activity execution, Proper Detailed geometrical design, and a satisfactorily prepared detailed design. Finally, Most projects don’t have the flexibility to change budgets and timelines and therefore this implies that any change in scope will result into Cost overruns, missed deadlines and lack of planning by organization means the loss of critical business revenue and the loss of their customers’ and shareholders’ trust. en_US
