Upgrading Kikungiri Neighbourhood - Kabale Municipality

Abstract

The project is basically aimed at upgrading kikungiri neighbourhood-Kabale municipality. Kabale Municipality is located in South western Uganda. It is the commercial centre for southern western gate Uganda and a gate way to Kisoro, Rubanda, Kanungu Districts and Rwanda. Additionally, Kabale Municipality has been upgraded to the city status by 2023 which shows the need to sustainable development spearheaded by physically planning. Kikungiri neighbourhood is strategically located along Kabale-Katuna road but it has been dominated by haphazard development which necessities the need for planning intervention. Data was collected for the residents within Kikungiri neighbourhood. This data was compiled and analysed to form the base for the proposals. This was backed up by SWOT analysis for the neighbourhood which showed the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and Threats to sustainable development. Based on the situational analysis, planning interventions were identified which included clear demarcation of the bus park with a supportive circulation plan, residential developments within a walkable distance. Conclusively when this plan is implemented, a self-contained neighbourhood which supports the needs of the people will be realised.
